Things went catastrophically wrong. It was a real mess. We tried to {compensate|handle the situation, but it was like trying to stop a blizzard with a cocktail stick. We're still picking up the shards and feeling the blow of this epic fail.

Sometimes you encounter situations so horrifically bad that you can't help but smile. It's like your brain tries to understand the sheer extent of chaos and just resigns itself to fate, opting for amusement as a coping strategy.
But then, you suddenly become aware that it's not really actually that amusing. It's just plain horrifyingly awful. And the laughter you felt morphs into a groan.
In the end, you are left with a sense of confusion. You question about the purpose of it all. Was this some kind of twisted art experiment?
Or were we just living in a simulation gone wrong?
Tragedy of Epic Proportions
The earthquake struck with devastating force, destroying entire villages in its sweep. Buildings collapsed like fragile toys, and the screams that ensued was deafening. Worst Day Ever
It all started with a case of bedhead hair. I couldn't make it to look right. As I was running out the door, I trippedover and badly all over my new shoes. To make matters worse, Very bad I was totally running behind for a very important appointment.
I with no time to spare. My {boss|friend|was absolutely furious. I tried to explain, but it was no use.
The rest of the day was just as bad. went wrong. I stay awake.
By the time I reached my destination, I was exhausted. This day, this terrible day will be forever remembered as the worst day ever.

It all started out horribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then it went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to run away and hide.
